Missouri Wing Cadet Attains Spaatz Award

December 27, 2024

Join North Central Region in congratulating Missouri Wing's Cadet Colonel David Butler, of the Sedalia Cadet Flight, on receiving his Spaatz Award -- presented by CAP National Commander Maj. Gen. Regena Aye at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, MO!

The General Carl A. Spaatz Award is Civil Air Patrol’s highest cadet honor. It is presented to cadets who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, character, fitness, and aerospace education. Cadets qualify for this prestigious award after devoting an average of four years to progress through sixteen achievements in the CAP Cadet Program. Along the way they develop self-discipline, a strong sense of personal responsibility, the ability to lead and persuade, and the foundation necessary for pursuing a career in aviation, space, or technology. Less than one-half of 1 percent of CAP cadets achieve the award.

In addition to Maj. Gen. Aye, Missouri Wing Commander Col. Jennifer Smith and 509th Bomb Wing Commander Col. Keith Butler, USAF, and proud father of C/Col. Butler, also spoke.

Cadet Colonel Butler also received an incentive flight in a T-38 Talon jet fighter trainer at Whiteman AFB in a program started by Maj. Gen. Kenneth Eaves, former Assistant Adjutant General-Air and Commander, Missouri Air National Guard, several years ago to recognize Missouri Wing Spaatz award winners and encourage future military aviation-minded youth. C/Col. Butler even got to fly in a formation with his father, U.S. Air Force Col. Keith Butler, 509th Bomb Wing commander!
